The best travel souvenirs are the ones you use, not the ones that gather dust in a drawer. After years of travelling (and years of decluttering), my rule is simple: if I won’t touch it in daily life, it stays in the shop. Here’s what makes the cut.
My Best Travel Souvenirs List
1. A stamp or chop
This should be everyone’s go-to souvenir. Small, light, personal and actually useful. In Korea it’s a dojang, in China and Singapore a chop, in Japan a hanko. Get your name carved, then stamp your journal, your letters, your books. Every time you use it, you’re back there.
2. A local cookbook
The souvenir that keeps on giving. Buy one in the country, cook from it at home, and your kitchen becomes a passport. Bonus points if it’s in the local language and you have to guess half the recipes.
3. Local jewellery
A ring, a bracelet, a pair of earrings made by a local artisan. You wear it every day, and when someone compliments it, you get to tell the story.
4. Postcards
Cheap, flat and nostalgic. Send one to yourself and it arrives home weeks later like a little time capsule. Or frame a few and make a mini gallery wall.
5. Art
A print, a small painting, a sketch from a street artist. You see it every day on your wall, which is exactly the point.
6. Clothes
Wearable souvenirs are the most useful of all. A shirt from a local designer, a scarf, a pair of sandals. Pick something you’d actually wear on a Tuesday, not just at a themed party.
7. A magnet
Yes, the classic. But it holds up your shopping list every single day, so it earns its place. Pick one that’s well-made and local, not the plastic mass-produced kind.
8. Groceries
My favourite category. Spices, sauces, snacks, tea, instant noodles. Supermarkets are the best souvenir shops in the world, and you get to taste the trip again at home. (Always check your customs rules and declare food.)
9. Christmas ornaments
The one exception to my daily use rule. They come out once a year, but decorating the tree turns into a walk down memory lane. Every bauble is a trip.
The Golden Rule of Travel Souvenirs
Before you buy, ask yourself: will I use this daily? If yes, buy it. If no, take a photo instead. Your suitcase (and your future self, decluttering on a Sunday) will thank you.
