GGP Backpacking Europe for a whole month, just Jik and me, has been hatched. That is the pact we made in Sydney last weekend, somewhere between a Vietnamese food trail in Cabramatta and Jik’s third round of banana fritters.
GGP stands for Glitter Geek Project, the little world Jik and I started back in Singapore in 2010. Nine years, two countries and a hundred “we should totally…” conversations later, we decided to stop talking and start writing things down. In pen. In my planner. Which makes it legally binding, in my opinion.
Here is the deal. GGP goes to Europe, baibeh! By 2019. On 19 November, if possible. No matter what commitments we have, we are going. Not work, not money, not leave approval. Nothing gets in the way. (Jik, if you are reading this, I have it in writing.)
It will be 30 days. Eight countries. Just the two of us.
We also made a list of required itineraries, and each of us claimed our own.
- Visit the most boho coffee shop in one of the countries (Jik)
- Take an overnight train to cross a country (me)
- Camp overnight on a beach (Jik)
- Hike a mountain together (me)
- Eat the pizza from the Eat Pray Love restaurant (Jik, and I fully support this)
- Wear the same outfit from head to toe (me, matching or bust)
You might notice what is missing. No countries. No flights. No budget. The finance girl in me is twitching a little. But I think that is the point. This list is not really about where we go. It is about what kind of travellers we want to be when we get there, together, for 30 days straight.
We did pick up a good luck talisman in Cabramatta for the Year of the Pig, so I am counting that as our travel insurance. November is about nine months away. I have not booked a single thing, and neither has Jik. But the page is written, the page is initialled, and now it is on the internet, which means all of you are officially witnesses. GGP is going to Europe, baibeh. Watch this space.
