Peranakan Culture

Navigating Life with the Influences of Peranakan Culture

1 min read

It wasn’t until recently that I realized that I have Peranakan culture influence in my life. When I researched it, I learned that my favourite dish, Sayur Lodeh, which Amma cooks every time I visit Jakarta, is of Peranakan culture. Who knew? My thoughts wandered to the Peranakan museum I visited in Penang. I remember the clothes displayed there. My grandma used to wear it; that’s also what I wore for my graduation – called Kebaya in Indonesian. Assimilation of culture, I guess. Then I remember kue – the Indonesian pastries. It’s so famous in Medan, which is heavily influenced by Peranakan culture, too.
