Little India Singapore

Immigrating and Livin La Vida Local in Singapore

3 mins read

Hey there!

So, guess what? I moved to Singapore in the last week of June this year, and let me tell you, it’s been quite an adventure!

I snagged a room in a sweet three-bedroom apartment in Little India. After bidding farewell to the student hostel life, I found refuge there. Seriously, my old dorm mate, Tweety, was a ticking time bomb. Living in fear of a roommate meltdown? It’s not my idea of a good time.

Now, let’s talk about my new digs. It’s like a palace compared to my old prison cell dorm room. Aircon? Check. Study table? Double check. And get this – there’s even a wardrobe! Plus, the complex has a freaking swimming pool. I feel like I hit the jackpot. And it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the market and the lively Serangoon Road. It’s safe to say I’m absolutely loving it. Scratch that; I super duper love it!!

I’ve fully embraced the local lifestyle here. After morning classes, I swing by the Pek Kio Market‘s food court for a late lunch at my favourite Indian food stall. And for dessert? A pack of DARS chocolate from the provision shop nearby. It’s become my daily ritual. The rest of my day is a mix of studying, tackling Uni projects, hanging out with friends, and exploring this vibrant city.

Weekends, though, are a whole different story. I sleep in, indulge in a 3-hour makeup ritual (because why not?), and then hit the town with my friends. Finding the perfect “respectably sexy” dress is a must. We wait eagerly for the clock to strike 8 PM, and then it’s out until the wee hours. Yes, you read that right.

The next day is a bit of a struggle with the dreaded hangover. I stay in bed until hunger becomes unbearable, and then it’s off to the Pek Kio Market’s food court for the ultimate hangover fixer: chicken rice. It’s comfort food at its finest. Two packs of DARS chocolate later, and I’m officially in weekend recovery mode.

Now, I’m aware that my routine might not exactly align with the typical Singaporean lifestyle. Heck, even other immigrants might raise an eyebrow. But you know what? I don’t care. I love Singapore, its culture, and this crazy life I’ve carved out for myself here. Oh, and did I mention the joy of drinking tap water without a worry?

Update: Fast forward to now, and I’ve practically become a nomad within Singapore. From my uncle’s house to student dorms and apartments in Farrer Park to shophouses in Hougang – I’ve been all over the place. And let’s not forget my stint in Melbourne, Australia. It’s been a wild ride, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
