Kuzu Izakaya Woodend Australia

Eating at Japanese Izakaya in Small Town Australia

2 mins read

An Indonesian and a Chinese went into a Japanese Izakaya located in a small town in Australia; It sounds like the start of a bad joke, doesn’t it? But that’s precisely what happened.

Liz and I are staying in a lovely Airbnb in Mt Macedon this weekend, and we went to Kuzu Izakaya tonight for dinner.

Located in the neighbouring town of Woodend, we took a taxi from our Airbnb, passing the gorgeous autumn leaves Mt Macedon is famed for.

We were there just for the reservation and stayed until the end of the allocated two-hour window. The restaurant was fully packed, the service was good, and the decor felt authentic. It’s hard to believe a full-on izakaya exists and thrives in the middle of nowhere in the state of Victoria.

Liz and I shared a not-so-impressive sushi sashimi platter, tasty chilli edamame, bad chips, followed by the yummiest miso-glazed scallop, okay-ish prawn tempura and delicious soft shell crab. We also had sparkling sake, and I had a lovely tasting flight of four different umeshu.

So, overall, I’d say The Kuzu izakaya restaurant was good. But it’s not life-changing enough for me to want to revisit it all the way from Melbourne, making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I am so glad to share with Liz.

We came back from Kuzu Izakaya dinner after dark, passing through unlit roads, inside a taxi driven by an Indian guy and paid $40, where every single second feels like 10 cents added.

Now I am writing this, with Jurassic Park playing in the background, because I want to remember this – our stay in the Airbnb, our dining experience in the Kuzu Izakaya, and everything in between. Including now, especially now, being happily full, super drunk, a little sleepy and entirely grateful.
