Happy Diwali

Indian Immigrants’ Diwali Celebration

2 mins read

Have you heard of Diwali before? It’s the most celebrated Hindu festival every year. Known as the festival of lights, it is about the victory of good over evil.

Today is Diwali, and I want to wish everyone a Happy Diwali! I am celebrating it with my parents and family back in Jakarta. And I am sending you happy vibes all the way to wherever you guys are.

Happy Diwali

Diwali Cake

In the morning we got a delivery of red velvet cake from my cousin, which was a nice surprise! And I gave Amma a pair of earrings that matched the colour of her Indian suits.

My cousins and friends came over in the afternoon for Diwali lunch at our house. It felt so nice to meet some of them after many months or even years.

We ate so many Diwali treats; some were made by Amma and others’ by her sisters. All were delicious. My favourite was my aunty’s Wajik Bandung.

I prepared party favours for the guests, young and old. The last time we handed out these were like two decades ago. Can you believe it?! I included our childhood favourites such as Nyam Nyam, Silver Queen chocolate bar, and wafers. I also put some souvenirs from Bali. Everyone seemed to be happy to get one, no matter how old they were. At least, I was when I opened one a day earlier 😀

Amma also cooked a lot of food the day before. Twelve dishes, to be exact!! I have no idea how did she pull it off. She even cooked sambal matah, one of my favourite Balinese-style chilli pastes.

We took tons of pictures, and I used my Instax camera, a birthday gift, for the first time and finished three rolls on it.

I would love to keep the Diwali tradition of hanging out with my loved ones – parents, cousins and friends – it’s so precious.
