Great Wall of China Beijing

Great Wall of China is My First 7 Wonders of the World

3 mins read

I went to Beijing for the sole reason of seeing the Great Wall of China.

The Great wall had fascinated me for a long time, since the third grade in primary school when I first learned about the 7 Wonders of the World. Back then, there was only one version of the 7 Wonders of the World, unlike now, with the New 7 Wonders, the Medieval 7 Wonders, and the Modern 7 Wonders. So, I wonder, what could be the difference between the new and the modern version of the World wonders?

Then I saw it, the magnificent Great Wall. My eyes were watery! Only a few things can get me all mushy. Some examples are the movie Independence Day, warm desserts, and the Great Wall of China.

When a tour mate acquaintance saw my tears, I told them that I was from a tropical country and cold weather made my eyes watery. I didn’t want to be the Indian tourist who took too many pictures of the Ming Tombs and cried in front of the Great Wall of China.

I realized we had to climb the wall when we reached the entrance.

Why, oh why, did I think the Great Wall of China was flat?

Why didn’t it occur to me when I stared at the picture of it on my office desktop for many hours while acting busy?

I hate climbing! I hated it, but not more than my fascination with the wall, so I did.

I braced and started climbing the Great Wall of China, even though I stopped after every ten steps pretending to take in the scenic view (but took an embarrassing number of selfies). There were three visible towers from the bottom of the wall. When I reached tower two, I gave up. Settling for that wouldn’t be much different anyway because it was foggy. If you have been to the third tower, please don’t tell me the view is much better from up there.

On the way back, I realized it was the first of the 7 Wonders of the World I learned years ago. I always thought the Taj Mahal would be my first; hopefully, it will be my next.
