Choosing A Footy Club Is A Part of Australian Culture

2 mins read

The pressure of choosing a footy club has been in the back of my mind, together with the pressure of being “accepted” in my new job, so when I had free time at work, I casually mentioned it to a colleague.

I told him that Fafa’s friends were pressuring me to choose a Melbourne footy club and that I wasn’t sure how or who to choose. “I have never been to a footy game before”, I told him.

Man, oh man, I picked the perfect time and person to throw this non-essential issue to. David, my colleague, started telling me about his fave footy club, the Collingwood Football Club, which, I don’t know, for whatever reason, reminds me of Harry Potter.

He told me that: “Collingwood supporters hate everyone else and everyone else hates them“. Well, that is not how u convenience people, David! But go on…

He showed me some videos on YouTube of their epic wins in the past. He also explained to me what their logo meant, the colour and the mascot, the black and white magpie bird. It was then I saw it. He wore their jersey today. I could see he was really into them and so passionate about this club.

My heart is moving in Collingwood’s direction. I asked David whether there is any footy club with the pink logo, and he said Collingwood has it to support the LGBT community. That’s it. I was sold.

So, I hereby declare that from now on, I am a Collingwood Football Club supporter and have one-uped my Australian culture immersion. I am going to watch their game this weekend (it sounds like “wikin” in my Asian ears) and super looking forward to it.
