9 Must-Do Cultural Activities in Perth Western Australia

4 mins read

Have you been to Western Australia? If you are planning to visit, don’t skip Perth just yet! There are many unique things to do in Perth compared to other places in Australia. Check out my Perth itinerary from my last visit to the City of Lights, and feel free to add your own version.

Have a picnic in the secret garden at Yanchep National Park

This is probably one of Western Australia’s best-kept secrets. A picturesque garden by the lake, Yanchep National Park, reminded me of the lake we saw in Salzburg, only better. If you’re considering a garden-themed wedding in Australia, this national park would be my top recommendation.

Get up close and personal with the wildlife

Before Perth, I had seen plenty of kangaroos and a couple of koalas, but never up close like the ones we saw in Yanchep National Park. It was a completely different experience, standing a few meters away from hundreds of kangaroos and within arm’s reach of eucalyptus-munching koalas.

Go fishing in the freezing cold

To be honest, this is not my idea of fun or even something I would typically do in Perth, but with plenty of amazing seashores, it might be on your Perth itinerary. At least a family of four we met during a brief seashore stop on the tour seemed to enjoy it, undisturbed by the cold wind or single-digit weather.

Eat the biggest lobster you have ever seen

I LOVE seafood, but lobster? Not so much. I found them too expensive for the not-so-great taste. That was until I tried the fresh lobster at the Lobster Shack. Grilled with garlic, it tasted incredibly good. Plus, it only cost me $25, which enhanced the taste in my head. A grilled lobster meal should be on everyone’s Perth itinerary.

Experience magic at the Pinnacles

The Pinnacles, set in a golden-sanded desert, is a landscape unlike anything I had ever seen before, not even in Dubai. It’s a collection of stone sculptures that evoke both awe and an eerie feeling. However, it’s a different kind of eerie compared to what I felt inside Fremantle Prison (number 7 on this Perth itinerary).

Stroll around Fremantle

My colleague told me that Fremantle was a must-visit, and after spending the whole afternoon there, I must agree with him. This port town exudes a very chill vibe, where time seems to freeze for at least a couple of decades. There are plenty of things to see here, including the Fremantle Market on Cappuccino Street.

Get inside the Fremantle Prison

You can even stay overnight in Fremantle Prison, but even if you’re too weak-minded for an Orange Is The New Black-style sleepover, I still recommend visiting it during the daytime. Get drunk at the port.

Fremantle Port was crazy gorgeous, and with rows of restaurants, it’s a perfect spot to wind down and let loose. That’s exactly what I did on my last evening in Perth.

Enjoy Perth city centre

Though there were many things to see around Perth, my favorite part was the Perth city center. It was where I first fell in love with this city. There were lots of vintage buildings and restaurants to explore, not to mention the uber-cool City of Perth library.
