Australian Meat Pie

Biting Into My First Australian Meat Pie in Pie Face

2 mins read

I, and my major hangover, woke up by knocking on the Kings Cross hotel door. “Are you okay?” Jik asked me through the crack of a chained door.

I. yes.” I could hear my throaty voice. “Breakfast?” she offered. So 15 minutes later, freshly showered and 10% sober, we stepped into the biting chill of Sydney’s winter morning.

I need coffee”, I whined. “I’ll do you one better,” she said, stopping at a place called Pie Face.

Australian Meat Pie

According to Jik, Pie Face is a must-try when travelling to Australia.

Meat Pie is an Australian icon, and we gotta try it!

She said while shoving one into my face. It’s small and bite-sized, and the smell was so delicious. I took a bite. It’s good, but “What’s in it?” I asked her. “A bit of that, a bit of this and all kinds of meat”, she replied with her mouth full.

Oh well. I took another bite and tasted more of the gravy-soaked meat. After a few more bites, it’s gone. I felt so much better afterwards.

For me, the Australian meat pie is suitable for sobering oneself up, but that was it. I didn’t have any craving for it during the rest of our stay there. Not even we ate the excellent meat pie at Harry’s Café de Wheels the day after.

Maybe if I combine it with Indonesian chilli sauce…
