Australian Culture Lessons Nobody Warned Me About

3 mins read

Nobody hands you a manual for Australian culture when you land. You pick it up slowly, one awkward moment at a time, until one day you realise you have become one of them. As an immigrant, here are the habits I never planned on adopting but now cannot live without.

1. Own a Cookbook (or Ten)

Australians love a cookbook. Every kitchen I have walked into has a shelf of them, usually Ottolenghi, a Donna Hay or two, and something from a celebrity chef who once had a TV show. Growing up, recipes lived in my mum’s head, not on a shelf. Now I own a stack and I cook from about three of them. Very Australian of me.

2. Carry a KeepCup

Turning up to a café without your own cup is a small moral failure here. The KeepCup is part of the uniform, and it even started right here in Melbourne. Mine lives in my bag permanently, next to the hand cream and the receipts I will never sort.

3. Double Your Drinking Budget

Whatever you think you’ll spend on drinks, double it. Alcohol in Australia is not cheap, and social life revolves around it. After work drinks, a quick one at the pub, a bottle for the barbecue. It all adds up, and my bank account learnt this the hard way.

4. Eat Lunch at Your Desk

Back home, lunch was an event. Here, it is a salad eaten over the keyboard while answering emails. I resisted this for a while. Now I am a proud member of the sad desk lunch club, crumbs in my keyboard included.

5. Drink Coffee Outside Like Your Life Depends on It

Ten degrees? Windy? Light drizzle? Australians will still sit outside with their flat white, coat zipped up, pretending it is perfectly pleasant. I used to think this was madness. Now I am out there with them, shivering, happy, and judging anyone who sits indoors.

Picking up Australian culture has been less about big moments and more about small habits that sneak in when you are not looking. Some I chose, some chose me. I still carry my own culture everywhere I go (sambal in the fridge is non negotiable), but somewhere between the KeepCup and the cold outdoor coffee, Australia became part of me too. And honestly, I would not have it any other way.
