Cheers Big Ears, Yet Another Insult-ey Sounding Aussie Slang

1 min read

Earlier today, a colleague responded to my Teams message with, “Cheers, big ears“.

At first, I was like, okay, I didn’t know I have big ears; maybe I do, but it never bothered me, so okay. Also, are we already on work-bestie-insulting-insults-as-term-of-endearments?

I replied with, “Err..okay *smiley face*“.

Thankfully, she back-tracked and explained to this brown Indo gal that “cheers big ears” is an Aussie slang. It’s an informal “thank you” between friends.

And, of course, it has to sound weird and insulting, almost like any other Aussie slang. She also taught me that I have to reply with, “Same goes, big nose”.

I have decided that I like this Aussie slang (though not as much as CBF – Can’t Be F***ed, taught by Amanda in my first year living here), and I will sprinkle it in my convos from now on.
