Visiting A Quaint Art and Crafts Gallery in Odense Denmark

2 mins read

There is a little art and crafts gallery in Odense in a corner of the Hans Christian Andersen Museum quarter. I stumbled upon it by chance while trying to find a place to start our day’s drinking session.

Odense is located to the west of Copenhagen. The idea to visit Odense was rather spontaneous. We were supposed to go to Aarhus but decided against it because it felt too far for a day trip.

I didn’t know much about Odense, except that it’s the place of a famous writer called Hans Andersen who wrote fairy tales. As someone who grew up with minimum exposure to Western fairy tales, I didn’t feel much about it. Anyway, off we went.

Visiting A Little Arts and Crafts Gallery in Odense Denmark

The 2-hour train journey to Odense ended up being the highlight of my trip to Denmark. But now, let’s get back to the Art and Crafts Gallery in Odense. I had a brief conversation with the artist. He owns the gallery and from the look of it, he also takes care of the gallery by himself. He has been drawing since 9 years old and can’t think of doing anything else.

I looked through his drawings and noticed repeated themes. Mermaid, princess, and ducks. At first, I didn’t connect these drawings with Hans Andersen’s fairy tales. But then it clicked. The Little Mermaid, The Princess, Pea, and The Ugly Duckling, among others.

I got my friend Priscilla, who taught me to support local shops whenever I can, a drawing of the little mermaid. I also got my Appa, who is an art aficionado, a drawing of the actual Hans Anderson village. He will like it for sure, especially if he knows I got it from a little gallery in Odense.

I really want to get more of these drawings. It’s original, cute and best of all, already framed. But the carry-on truly limits the things I can buy during the Scandinavian trip. In a way, it’s a good thing I guess, at least my credit card will thank me later.
