These are the Bali souvenirs I actually bring home, and as an Indonesian, I take oleh-oleh very seriously. Some are for gifting, some are for snacking on the plane, and some are for me pretending I live a slow, barefoot island life back in Melbourne.
My Bali Souvenirs List
1. Crystals
Bali’s spiritual scene means crystal shops everywhere, especially around Ubud. Rose quartz, amethyst, clear quartz, pick the one that calls to you (or the one that matches your shelf).
2. Bamboo stuff
Bamboo straws, bowls, cutlery and baskets. Light, pretty, practical and easy to pack.
3. Kacang Bali
Crunchy, garlicky fried peanuts that disappear way too fast. The classic oleh-oleh for family back home, and the first thing my relatives ask about.
4. Pie susu
Bali’s famous milk custard tarts. Buy them on your last day, they don’t last long (and neither will your self control).
5. Books
Ubud has lovely bookshops, including secondhand ones packed with travel reads and books on Balinese culture. A perfect slow afternoon.
6. Accessories
Silver jewellery from Celuk, beaded bags, rattan clutches. Prices are a fraction of what you’d pay in Melbourne.
7. Tees
Skip the generic singlet and go for local designs. Joger in Kuta is the cult pick, famous for its cheeky wordplay tees.
8. Swimwear
Bali has a thriving swimwear scene with local labels making beautiful, well cut pieces. Buy one, wear it the next day.
9. Indo brands
Bali is a great place to discover Indonesian fashion, beauty and homeware brands you won’t find overseas. Support local, and look stylish doing it.
10. Essential oils
Frangipani, lemongrass, sandalwood. Bottle the smell of a Balinese spa and take it home.
11. Scrubs
Traditional lulur and boreh body scrubs, the same ones used in Balinese spas. Cheap, natural and a ritual in a jar.
12. Dupa (incense)
You’ll smell it everywhere in Bali, at every temple and offering. Bring some home and your living room instantly feels calmer.
13. Teakwood kitchenware
Teak chopping boards, serving spoons and salad bowls. Heavy in the suitcase, but they last forever.
14. Mala beads
Prayer beads for meditation and mantra practice, sold all over Ubud in crystal, wood and seed versions.
15. Yoga mat
Bali is a yoga capital, so naturally you’ll find gorgeous mats, especially natural rubber and jute ones. Roll it up and strap it to your carry-on.
16. Tri Datu bracelet
The red, white and black thread bracelet worn by Balinese Hindus, representing the three gods Brahma, Wisnu and Siwa. Often given after a temple blessing, it’s a souvenir with real meaning.
