Last weekend, of our own free will, Fafa, Swen and I went hunting for the legendary spicy buffalo wings that have arrived in Singapore. The pub sits deep inside Seletar Airbase, in the old Republic of Singapore Flying Club clubhouse, and it is famously hard to find. Our taxi driver dropped us off somewhere random, and Swen had to guide us the rest of the way.
The wings are graded from level 0, not spicy at all, to level 35, pure madness. Levels 1 to 10 are on the menu, and you have to specially request anything from 11 to 35. If you can finish even one wing at level 30 or 35 and live to tell the tale, your name goes up on the Chilli Heads Hall of Fame, and you walk away with a certificate.
Level 10 vs Level 15: Our Spicy Buffalo Wings Showdown
We were obviously not that crazy. Just a tad bit crazy. I went for level 10, the top of the regular menu, spicy but almost bearable. The boys, meanwhile, went off menu and ordered level 15 each because, you know, boys will be boys. By the end of it, Swen’s lips were swollen, and Fafa was teary-eyed.
Worth It?
Was it a good experience? Absolutely! Especially the clam chowder, which was pure comfort after all that fire. Would we come back for more spicy buffalo wings? I doubt it. This was a one-time kind of thing, for the sake of both our friendship and our stomachs.
