A Sip of Singaporean Culture With Milo Dinosaur

2 mins read

Today, I officially levelled up in Singaporean culture: I gulped down a Milo Dinosaur.

It all started with Sha, my friend from Uni, who first introduced me to this dessert-in-disguise. We were doing a study session at a hawker centre near the main campus—me with my fish curry, him with chicken—and he ordered a Milo Dinosaur ( I assumed it was just a big size Milo), and I went with my go-to Bandung, another Singapore discovery that I love.

When the drinks arrived, Sha looked at my face and immediately guessed, “Don’t tell me you’ve never had it.

He explained, Milo Dinosaur = Milo drink with a mountain of Milo powder on top. Sha then generously let me try a sip. One sip, two sips…okay, interesting.

Fast forward to today: I was with my girls’ group in Dhoby Ghaut, right before our afternoon class, and I casually ordered another Milo Dinosaur. And oh boy… this one was twice the size of Sha’s and came with vanilla ice cream. Which kinda makes sense since we were at a hawker centre at tourist-centric Dhoby Ghaut.

My friends were ooohing and aaahing as I tried to finish it. I offered them some, but they had their own drinks—or maybe they were smart enough to know you don’t tackle a dessert like this right after a heavy meal, right before class, in an air-conditioned room.

My afternoon class was doomed. I struggled to process anything and was so glad to come back to my room for a siesta. But hey, at least I can tick another item off my Singapore bucket list before I return to Jakarta next year. Already sad thinking about it… Maybe one more Milo Dinosaur will cheer me up.
