Kopi Luwak Bali Indonesia

Drinking Kopi Luwak in Bali For The Blog

2 mins read

Have you ever been at a point in your life where you pause, look at what’s in front of you, and wonder—Have I gone too far? Earlier today, I found myself doing exactly that while staring down a small, unassuming cup of Kopi Luwak in a coffeeshop in Bali. You know, the one made from beans that have been digested and pooped out by civet cats. Yes, that Kopi Luwak.

Am I really this culture-curious? Is this what I’ve become?

I get it—Kopi Luwak is famous. It’s exotic. It’s a “thing.” And while it can be outrageously expensive (think $50 a cup in Singapore), here in Bali it’s surprisingly affordable. Within budget. Technically, within my budget while I am travelling, while I am in Bali.

But here’s the catch: I’m not a coffee person. And Fafa, who is, was sitting next to me with his half-done iced latte, wasn’t interested in the pooped bean caffeine either.

“You do it,” he said.

So I did. I put in the order.

Not out of caffeine craving or curiosity for taste, but more because… well, it felt like one of those things you do. For the story. For the blog.

The cup arrived. I smelled it. Just smelled like coffee. Strong coffee. That’s it. Honestly, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between this and what my aunt drinks every morning in Medan.

I took a sip. Bitter. Sour. Just okay. A few more sips, then I was done. I didn’t finish it.

But I did it. I drank Kopi Luwak in Bali. A bucket list item? I guess so. At least I’ll make it one.

“For the blog,” I told Fafa, half-proud, half-cringing.

I wonder what else I’ll end up doing for the blog.

Hopefully, this will be the last poop-related story.
