⛩️ — Ringing in the New Year in Japan.

I learned about Kuchisabishii recently. Literally means “a lonely mouth,” and it describes the urge to snack even when you are not hungry. You’ve eaten, but somehow you yearn for something crunchy, chewy, small. Because it’s not about hunger to begin with, but comfort, and the ritual of chewing while thinking or just living the mundane daily life. Kuchisabishii lives in those in-between moments — a convenience store pause, a pantry visit five minutes after dinner, ekiben on a long train ride — and in true Japanese fashion, it names a micro-feeling with care rather than judgment. Because honestly, a lonely mouth deserves a snack.
