A Night of Bunk Bed-ing in Guesthouse Waya Sapporo

3 mins read

Hi guys — this will be a short post brought to you in silence from Guesthouse Waya in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan.

Guesthouse Waya (aka hostel) has a few rooms — each with four bunk beds, sleeping up to eight people. The room I’m sharing has Charles, Vi, Yin, and two other strangers who have been sleeping since we checked in a few hours ago… guessing jet lag?? They are obviously in deep sleep — like deep, deep — but we still tried to keep the noise to a minimum.

We unpacked in silence and started our nighttime routine, which felt so good after more than a day of travelling. I started in Jakarta yesterday, flew to Singapore, met them at the airport there, then flew to Haneda. From Haneda, we had to run to catch a bus to the domestic flight to Sapporo, then rushed to buy the JR Pass at the last minute before finally arriving at the hostel by taxi.

Car, flight, bus, flight, train, taxi. That’s way too many modes of transportation within a short period of time.

After showering in the communal bathroom, we climbed into our bunk beds, ready to call it a day, when Yin suddenly reminded us that we hadn’t had dinner.

Vi — the natural leader/mum of the group — somehow managed to find enough snacks for the four of us to share. Yan Yan and Pocky galore. I didn’t even realise she had bought them earlier when we stopped at Lawson.

Speaking of which, we also shared a cardboard sake, and Yin grabbed some yoghurt from the same Lawson’s (where was it again? 😂). Well… yoghurt and sake turned out to be a surprisingly decent combo.

With that, we turned off the light, drew our mini curtains, wished each other goodnight, and are now quietly playing on our phones.

We’re only staying at Guesthouse Waya for this one night; we’re off to Lake Akan tomorrow, but it has been a fun and memorable start to this Hokkaido trip.
