Coming Home Is One of the Best Parts of Traveling

3 mins read

Coming home for me is one of the best parts of travelling. Yesternight we reached home at midnight after flying from Christchurch airport six hours before. Instead of crashing immediately on the bed, I did my usual rounds around the house. I was so glad to be home!

One of the things I always look forward to on my travels, especially the long ones, is to go home to my familiar things. Even if home meant the postage-stamp-sized room that I rented as an immigrant in Singapore.

This time it got a little worse because it had been two weeks! The last time I travelled for that long was a couple of years ago, and then I didn’t have a home as I was living with my parents, so it wasn’t as bad. But I have nothing to complain about. In the past two weeks, we travelled to New Zealand South Island, where I got the chance to learn more about the local Maori culture.

Turangawaewae

The Maori has a saying related to home, it’s called Turangawaewae. Translated as a place where one belongs and has the right of residence. It’s one of the most beautiful explanations of a home for me.

But this time, I came home to my plants, IKEA armchair, crystal collection, culture trinkets, candles, Christmas tree, an endless supply of tea and PJs, fast wifi speed and best of all, to my Netflix and Stan! That is the best part of travelling.

I showered, made myself my sleepy tea (Gone Surfing by T2Tea) and slipped into the blissdom of Netflix. I also googled Hoarders, Million Dollars Listing, Snapped: Killer Couples and Come Date With Me, all of the TV shows I watched on New Zealand’s Bravo TV which I have grown attached to. Especially Hoarders! It felt like a guilty pleasure, minus the guilt part. And that too is one of the best parts of travelling.

I planned to wake up late today, but I am sitting in front of my laptop, which I also miss writing a lot.

It’s funny, this travel culture thing. I am happy to go on trips, and I am happy to wake up in my own bed after going on trips, and if you ask me to be on the road again tomorrow, I am up for it! Even to a place without TV or tea, as long as I can pack my PJs along. Because then I get to come home, which really is one of the best parts of travelling!

  1. […] I have written about this before; I can’t deny that wherever I travel, especially if it’s longer than a week, I start missing home, missing Melbourne ━ from the coffee to the people, but never the weather. Travelling makes me better appreciate my home, life, routines, and rituals back home. I’d go so far as to say that coming home is one of the best parts of travelling. […]
