Majestic Candi Borobudur Temple In Yogyakarta Indonesia

Do you know that Borobudur temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in the world?

It is pretty unique considering only a teeny tiny portion of Indonesians are Buddhist. It's also one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.

I remembered distinctly that our primary school history teacher taught us that it's one of the 7 Wonders of the World. Apparently, it no longer is.

I have visited Borobudur temple twice. First was with my parents, when I was 2 years old, and then recently, with my cousins. In between these two visits, I also managed to experience sunrise at the Angkor Wat in Siam Reap Cambodia

Back to Borobudur story, we woke up at 2:30 AM to shower and put some makeup on so we wouldn't look like sleep-deprived monsters in the photos. We left Yogyakarta hotel at 3ish hoping to reach Borobudur temple to catch the sunrise. Unfortunately, it rained at dawn and there was no chance of a beautiful sighting of the morning sun.

The gloomy weather gave a rather different atmosphere, and we decided to be grateful for it, too. After all, we were at Borobudur, this amazing culturally rich historical architecture.

Do you know that there is a Buddha sitting inside each stupa in Borobudur?

Unfortunately, some of the Buddha statues were stolen from the stupas, leaving some of it empty. This fact saddens me. Who in their right mind would cause damage to a historical icon?

Inside one of these 72 stupas, the Buddha statue is sitting with his legs crossed.

Increase your good luck by touching the wish-granting BuDdha in Borobudur temple

It's believed that if you are able to touch the Buddha's left toe from outside, the thing that you wish for will be granted. My dad taught me this when I was young, but he also told me never to do it because there might be dangerous insects inside. Oh, my forever sensible father!

We spent the whole morning there, before packing our gear and heading back to have the most popular local Indonesian food in Yogyakarta for breakfast . We then visited the mystique Taman Sari water castle and bought some batik before taking off on our evening flight.

Have you ever visited Borobudur temple? What's your favorite UNESCO world heritage site?
