About

Hi, I am Kal!

Kal Kulture Kween

A Melbourne-based brown female blogger who hasn’t quit my job to travel the world. Instead, I work full-time so that I can travel sometimes.

I aspire to embrace cultures from different pockets of the world to stretch my perceptions about people, beliefs and practices beyond ticking off yet another foreign destination on the map. In this travel-culture blog, I plan to explore bits and pieces of world cultures by researching interesting cultural tidbits, from having cultural chats with the locals to eating different cuisines and sharing them in bite-sized semi-memoir writings.

If the findings of the local market, festivals, celebrations and traditions practices, embracing unfamiliar food and learning about different cultures and traditions with a dash of woo-woo-ness is intriguing, you have clicked the right URL.

A Bit More About Me

I am a Tamilan (South Indian) by race and Indonesian by birth. It makes me a polyglot who loves spicy food, but unfortunately, I’m terrible at dancing. But, hey, it canโ€™t all be good, can it?

I am also into street photography, keep too many indoor plants, carry tarot cards in my work bag and believe I was a reincarnation of a fruit fly in my past life.

I practice JOMO and yoga semi-regularly. I also love to read (and collect books I vow to read one day), write and go on adventures. I am happy spending hours in bookstores, absolutely fascinated by fish markets, and enjoy eating all kinds of food with chopsticks.

My first solo trip was to Bali, and then years later to Beijing. I also would move to Japan in a heartbeat. When I win the lottery, I will buy a house in a small town in Japan, somewhere between Tokyo and Takayama.

If…

If I were a piece of essay, I wish to be Nina Mingya’s
If I were a stanza of a poem, I wish to be found inside Lang Leav’s work
If I were a tarot card, I’d be the Queen of Wands version of the Fool

A Bit More About The Blog

The year was 2007; I was an early adopter of two things that everyone and their cousins are doing now: having a blog and letting my phone ring before texting back with “whatโ€™s up?” to avoid the voice conversation.

Ever since the blog has changed topics, names, and platforms multiple times, the only thing that has been consistent is my passion for writing, learning about things that piqued my curiosity and writing about some of them here.

These days, this blog is about my personal observations of the colourful world culture and traditions through market visits and culture chat. I strive to write a new post semi-regularly every Monday.

Lastly, I echo Martial when he said:

He lives two lives who relives his past with pleasure

This blog, through the travel diaries and nomad notes, is my attempt at reliving some of life’s best moments.

BLOG DISCLAIMER

I guess this is as good a time as any to post a disclaimer:

The blog is based on my personal experiences and understanding, and I may post incorrect things based on my perceptions or wrong information. If so, I apologize, and I’d appreciate it if you could help me correct it. Thank you so much for your attention and participation.
