I miss Singapore. A lot. I miss my friends the most. Singapore food comes after that. It’s not like I don’t have good food here in Melbourne. Also, nothing beats a home cooked meal, but I miss the time I shared with my friends exploring Singapore and eating some of the most delicious meals of my life. Among many, these are my favorite Singapore restaurants:
Best Singapore Food #1 – Old Yang Kee Hunan Restaurant, 53 Temple Street, Chinatown
This is Fafa’s favorite Chinese restaurant because they serve really spicy Hunan dishes. We found it on a random day of exploring Chinatown, or better described as me dragging Fafa to accompany me to explore Chinatown. You can find anything from chicken to frog here, but not a lot of seafood. The waiters are very friendly and attentive. They will cook the food according to your wish (extra spicy, less oil, etc). We celebrated the last New Year here with a bunch of friends and they loved it.
Best Singapore Food #2 – Punggol Nasi Lemak, 965 Upper Serangoon Road, Kovan
I have taken every single friend who has visited Singapore here. Drunk. Past midnight. I’d tell them that it’s a tradition and yes, it is. Nasi Lemak is a Singapore delicacy. It’s a rice dish cooked in coconut milk and served with varied condiments. Usually eaten for breakfast, it serves its purpose well at 3 in the morning. Here you can choose your own nasi lemak mix and pay accordingly. We would party until morning or until someone wanted to puke and then head to Kovan to have it. I am not sure they would recognize the sober me, but then again, they are always crowded, sometimes the queue reaches the street so they wouldn’t remember me anyway. If you decide to come here, do note that they close on Thursdays and if you are taking a taxi, tell the “uncle” to take you to Nasi Lemak Punggol in near Kovan MRT and don’t forget to try their unique chili paste.
Best Singapore Food #3 – Chong Qing Grilled Fish, Liang Seah Street, Bugis
Yin and I found this place long before it was as famous as it is now. It has since become the place for a celebration, a birthday, two Christmases and a pay rise. It was also my go to place to wind down whenever I had to work late on Fridays or weekends as it was quite nearby the office. Yes, I need chili to wind down. Specialized in Sichuan food, their main dish is the grilled fish. You can then choose the spiciness level from mild to numbing and add many side dishes to it. One regular size fish is enough for the three of you. Make sure to call first if you are going on a weekend as they are almost always full.
Best Singapore Food #4 – Usman’s Place, 238 Serangoon Road, Little India
I was taken to Usman on a date. It’s a roadside restaurant on a crowded corner at Little India. It wasn’t an ideal impress-your-date kinda restaurant, but I loved it! For a long time, I kept coming back there with friends and colleagues thinking Pakistani food = Indian food with a different name. I was stupid. Not until Fafa explained it to me and introduced me to Chicken Achari (picture above) did I know the difference. If you are at Little India and have had enough Indian food, try Usman’s, it’s really really good! And order their teh tarik, it’s a killer combination, local style.
The good news is I will be flying to Singapore tonight for some much needed and overdue quality time with my girlfriends. This means I will have to fit all the above, and chicken rice, within the weekend. And I will! How about you, what’s your favorite Singapore food?
