Sacher Torte The Celebrated Vienna Local Delicacy

2 mins read

I went to Vienna to eat their local delicacy, a chocolate cake named Sacher Torte. Austria is known worldwide for its culinary contributions, especially for their cakes. I heard about the world-famous Sacher Torte when I read a memoir of Austria by an Indonesian travel writer a few years ago and decided that I ought to try it one day.

Eating The Famed Sacher Torte at Hotel Sacher in Vienna

My cousins and I walked into the famous Hotel Sacher on one fine Vienna morning. I briefed them about the cake. We were ready. My first impression was that we have time travelled to the 20s; everything was so Downton Abbey-ish. It was not my habitat, especially not on a day when I wore ripped jeans.

The waiter came, took our orders and minutes later, we were presented with Sacher Torte. I could hear the angels’ singsong when I looked down at the almighty cake in front of me. It looked so pretty. Almost perfect; until I took the first bite.

It was sour! It might be due to the apricot jam layered on top, but nope.

I am not a professional cake critic, and the Sacher Torte was probably the most expensive cake I had ever popped into my mouth, but in my normal person’s opinion, the cake was not nice at all. Then and there, I knew that it was really overrated. Mostly by the hotel itself since they placed a booklet on each table) that contained the history of the cake’s awesomeness.

None of us finished our cakes and left Hotel Sacher feeling terribly disappointed.

I almost shipped this cake to Singapore as a birthday gift for myself! I think the cake tasted sour because it spoilt during the shipment. Thankfully the rest of our Vienna experience was pleasant. We stayed in a very nice local Airbnb and explored more of Vienna’s culture through the abundantly available architectural buildings, food, and arts.
