Majestic Candi Borobudur Temple in Yogyakarta Indonesia

Do you know that Borobudur temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in the world?

It is pretty unique, considering that only a few Indonesians are Buddhist. It’s also one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.

I remember distinctly that our primary school history teacher taught us that it’s one of the 7 Wonders of the World. It no longer is.

We left the Yogyakarta hotel at 3 in the morning, hoping to reach the Borobudur temple to catch the sunrise. But, unfortunately, it rained at dawn, and there was no chance of a beautiful sighting of the morning sun. Nevertheless, we decided to be grateful for the gloomy weather, which gave us a somewhat different atmosphere. After all, we were at Borobudur, the unique culture-rich historical architecture.

Do you know that a Buddha is sitting inside each stupa in Borobudur?

Unfortunately, some Buddha statues were stolen from the stupas, leaving some empty. This fact saddens me. Who in their right mind would cause damage to a historical icon?

Inside one of these 72 stupas, the Buddha statue sits with his legs crossed.

Increase your good luck by touching the wish-granting Buddha in the Borobudur temple.

In Indonesian culture, it’s believed that if you can touch Buddha’s left toe from the outside, the thing that you for will be granted. My Appa taught me this when I was young, but he also told me never to do it because there might be dangerous insects inside. Oh, my forever sensible father!

We spent the whole morning there before packing our gear and heading back to have the most popular local Indonesian food in Yogyakarta for breakfast. We then visited the mystique Taman Sari water castle and bought some batik before taking off our evening flight.
